We’re spotlighting LOCAL to Edmonton businesses and entrepreneurs to create awareness and support for those in our community who are dedicated to sharing their talents and passions with us.

As LOCAL to Edmonton entrepreneurs ourselves, we truly understand how difficult it can be to succeed, and we’d like to share and celebrate all their hard work!

Generate Energy is an Alberta based company specializing in the design and installation of solar photovoltaic systems, LED retrofits, and energy monitoring solutions. We sat down with one of the founders and Operations Manager(+ long time friend!), Brandon Sandmaier to address a few FAQ’s, read on to find out more!

1. Is solar energy reliable and powerful enough for my home – especially with the weather we have in Alberta?

Alberta has more sunny days than most provinces in Canada and our cooler average annual temperatures actually make solar PV systems perform more efficient. A local study at NAIT shows that snow cover on solar panels only reduces their annual energy production by an average 5%/year.

Residential solar PV systems are dependable and long-lasting; a proven technology that can be designed to produce some or all of your home’s electricity consumption in one year. Modern solar PV systems grid-connected and require no batteries, which means your home can have the 24hr reliability of the electricity grid while producing your own power during the day from solar-generated electricity.

2. How much could I really save on my energy bills per month?

Solar energy produced is either used in the home or sold back to EPCOR at the rate you pay for your electricity. Each month there will be a credit to you on your bill if you have a solar PV system installed on your home for the amount of solar electricity sold that month.

Solar PV systems reduce your electricity bills by varying amounts each month because the amount of daily sunlight we see in Alberta varies each month. For example, in the summer (May -Sept) electricity bills will see the greatest reduction (70-100%) as the majority of the annual production is during these months.

3. Are there any tax credits, rebates or incentives that I can qualify for from the government?

Yes!  The City of Edmonton has a rebate program that can cover up to 15% of the cost of installing a residential solar PV system. GenerateEnergy is able to handle all of the rebate applications for our customers, to make the process stress free!.
